When editing an animation, the animation preview will automatically loop through allowing you to edit your animation in real-time. The feature I ended up using the most was the real-time animation preview. It has a basic set of tools, but its all you’ll need for pixel art. The great thing about Pixen is that it is specifically for pixel art. I’ll probably play around with it a little more and buy it to support the dev (and you should too). After “demoing” Pixen though, $10 is definitely a fair price. I know, not expensive, but I didn’t want to throw away $10 on something I’d never use again as I might have just done with an iPad app I picked up.

Its only $10 on the Mac App Store, but I grabbed and compiled the source instead.

I found Pixen when I started looking into software options for creating pixel art. I only looked elsewhere when starting to think about animating the sprite… Pixen At first glance, the brush engine seems to have some nice options. I actually ended up completing the sprite in Affinity Designer and will probably try to play around with it in the future for other 2D art. You can’t tile views in the Normal (single window) mode as you can in Photoshop, but switching between view tabs was a lot more convenient than zooming in and out in Pixelmator. The only feature I ended up using that Pixelmator did’t have was the ability to display a second view. I only played with it last night and today, but I’m really liking it. Its definitely heavier than Pixelmator and is intended for art and design. Thanks to emails from Sidebar, I found out about Affinity Designer (currently open beta). To my knowledge Pixelmator doesn’t support a second view for your document. It was hard to get a feel for my pixel art at actual size. Constantly zooming in and out to check my progress was dreadful. There were some minor issues with Pixelmator that I was already aware of (having used it somewhat previously), but what finally frustrated me was the inability to have a second view of my work. I was trying out some techniques from various pixel art tutorials. Hint: They are hidden in Preferences.įor a while, all was good. Luckily I found a little tip on enabling the Pixel and Pencil tools. I was immediately frustrated with it’s Brush tool as I couldn’t get it to paint without anti-aliasing. I ended up using a number of apps in the process. Getting there was hardly as simple as the result would lead you to believe though. Here is one of my first passes at pixel art/animation for a gbjam game I’m working on with its simple.
